Forklifts are running more frequently than usual, and stock turnover is accelerating. Yet few people take the time to stop and look up at the racks themselves.
Many hidden hazards don’t appear overnight. A small dent at the base of a upright caused by a forklift, a crossbeam slightly bent by an oversized pallet, or a safety pin that fell off during a loading operation and went unnoticed—these details may seem insignificant under normal circumstances, but once the load is increased, they become the weakest links in an entire row of racking.
Racking doesn’t cry out in pain. It only alerts you through deformation, unusual noises, and wobbling—and by then, it’s often too late. That’s why conducting a self-inspection of your warehouse in the fall offers excellent value for money.
First, the change of seasons. In the fall, the temperature difference between day and night widens, and humidity levels fluctuate. While steel itself isn’t affected by these changes, rust spots and damaged coatings on the shelving become more visible in this environment. It’s easier to check them now than to put it off until winter.
Second, a peak in workload is approaching. With the National Day and Labor Day holidays, Singles’ Day, and year-end sales pushes, the coming months will likely be the busiest period of the year for most warehouses. The racks will have to withstand frequent storage and retrieval operations during this time. Identifying issues now is far more proactive than dealing with them once things get hectic.
Third, take advantage of quiet periods to address issues. Most warehouses can still spare half a day for inspections at this stage; once the warehouse is at full capacity, there won’t even be enough staff to stop operations for maintenance.
Start with the uprights. Uprights are the “legs” of the racking system, and their main vulnerability is impact. Focus on checking the base for dents or bending, ensuring the impact guards are still in place, and verifying that the anchor bolts are tight. If an upright becomes unstable, the entire row of racking will be affected.
Next, inspect the beams and safety pins. The safety pins at both ends of the beams are the key safeguards against the beams falling off; during the inspection, check each level to ensure they are in place and none are missing. Also, pay attention to whether the beams are noticeably sagging—normal loading may cause slight elastic deformation, but if they do not spring back after unloading, it’s worth having the manufacturer take a look.
Shelves and shelf spacing. Check whether the shelves are warped or have curled edges, and whether any reinforcements have come loose. Verify that the shelf spacing still matches the current stored goods; if the goods have grown taller or the product categories have changed, the shelf spacing should be adjusted accordingly.
Overall rack stability and braces. Check that horizontal braces, diagonal braces, and back braces are all present and that none have been removed and left uninstalled. Some warehouses remove braces to free up space, which is a rather dangerous practice.
Floor and Aisles. Check for floor subsidence or cracks, and whether the racks are tilting due to an uneven floor. Verify that aisle widths are maintained and have not been encroached upon by temporary stockpiles. Narrow aisles significantly increase the likelihood of collisions.
The value of a self-inspection lies in “early detection.” Minor issues can be addressed on your own, such as replacing missing safety pins, reinstalling bracing, or cleaning rust and applying anti-corrosion treatment; For issues involving structural deformation, it is recommended to contact the original manufacturer directly for an assessment. Whether the solution involves reinforcement, replacing individual components, or a partial rearrangement, it is safer to let professionals make the final determination.
